AB, captain of the national team, in love with basketball – on first sight a surficial description, but after all a perfect resume. Mareike started her career with regular basketball, when she made her debut in the third division in Germany at an age of 14. After several cruciate ruptures doctors suggested quitting the sport early. But Mareike didn’t want to stop with basketball as she loved it so much. At the age of 18 she started playing wheelchair basketball.
The talented distance shooter played in the US for six years and learned how to handle the wheelchair – her sports equipment – perfectly. At the 2012 Paralympics in London the German national team won gold. At the final Mareike was the best shooter with 19 points. In Rio 2016 she won the silver medal and was as well the top scorer of Germany. Also in the Baskets jersey Mareike is featured by her ambition and special dedication for the game. Big aim of the 27-year-old is the world championships in Hamburg. Yet she misses the gold medal in this event.
